Microstamping of Ammunition leads package of bills passed on April 14th by NYS Assembly
On April 14th, the NY State Assembly passed a series of bills to crack down on illegal guns and help reduce the nearly 1,000 gun deaths occurring across the state each year. Perhaps the biggest news was the passage of legislation that would require all new semi-automatic pistols manufactured or delivered to any licensed dealer in New York State be capable of microstamping. The bill (A.9819-A), sponsored by Assemblywoman Michelle Schimel (D-Great Neck) would ensure that when a gun is fired, information identifying the make, model and serial number of the gun is stamped onto the cartridge as numbers and letters. Law enforcement supports this legislation and Sen. Martin Golden (R – Brooklyn) is poised to introduce similar legislation in the State Senate shortly.
Additional legislation passed by the Assembly included:
- Establishes a Registry of Persons Disqualified From Owning or Possessing a Gun (A.8700-B/Lentol)
- Cracking Down on Illegal Street Gun Trafficking by Regulating Gun Dealers (A.6525-A/Paulin)
- Banning Armor-Piercing Ammunition (A.3447/Koon)
- Tracking Guns Involved In Crimes (A.3451/Koon)
- Safe Gun Storage (A.76-A/Weisenberg)
- Tougher Ban on Assault Weapons (A.7331-A/Titone)
- Banning 50-Caliber Weapons (A.2772-A/Eddington)
